April 7, 2009 Spring and summer in Western Canada "Paul-André Fortier’s Cabane wowed Quebec audiences last June. The choreographer, who has over thirty years of dance experience under his belt, will soon leave the province to amaze audiences elsewhere.” – Le Devoir, March 28-29, 2009 Paul-André Fortier, one of the eight finalists in the 24th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal last March, is currently preparing to tour Canada with two of his choreographies, Cabane and Solo 30x30. Fortier’s first stop will be in Regina where he will present Cabane as part of the New Dance Horizons season. This creation, which premiered in Montreal at the Festival TransAmériques 2008, falls somewhere between in situ performance and installation. It takes place in and around a modular cabin and brings together choreographer/dancer Paul-André Fortier and Rober Racine, the visual artist, writer and musician who performs in the piece. The cabin, serving as shelter, workshop and screen for film-maker Robert Morin’s images, is seen both on traditional stages and in atypical locations. Thus in Regina, Cabane will be presented at the Conexus Art Center on Thursday, April 23 before being installed rather disturbingly in the neo-classical universe of the Regency Ballroom at the Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan on Friday, April 24. The Saskatchewan public will be able to continue its experience by going to the Neutral Ground gallery to see Quelques vautours / Some Vultures 2001-2003, a selection of drawings from the extensive series on this theme by visual artist Rober Racine. Paul-André Fortier was inspired by this work during the creation of Cabane. During his stay in Regina, Fortier will create a solo for dancer/choreographer Robin Poitras, who is also co-founder and artistic director of New Dance Horizons. This solo will be presented in Vancouver during the Dancing on the Edge Festival in July 2009. The choreographer will then take the cabin to Vancouver, where the piece will be presented at the Scotiabank Dance Center on June 11, 12 and 13. This centre is dedicated entirely to dance, and its activities are aimed at both the general public and the community of artists. During his Vancouver stay, Paul-André Fortier will also mentor young choreographers from British Columbia. From June 19 through July 18, Fortier will present Solo 30x30 in Vancouver. This in situ piece, presented outdoors for a period of 30 days, has been performed 270 times since 2006 and has been seen by thousands of people in nine different cities around the world (fortierdanse.blogspot.com). This time, the solo will be presented as part of the program for the Dancing on the Edge contemporary dance festival, which has been held every July for over twenty years. Paul-André Fortier is thus preparing for a busy season and will soon announce other events that will be on the schedule at the end of the summer.
